Chapter 43

Why can't I wake up? Alex thought, struggling to open his eyes, move a finger, or form a word with his dry lips.

He was motionless.

The dreams held him in a palette of colors that blended like an abstract painting. He saw his mother clutching at her blouse, jaw open wide. She sputtered and gasped, seeming to fight for breath.

Her hands shot to her throat. She mouthed his name. No sound came out. He wanted to go to her, but couldn't move. He was trapped, as if at the end of a long tunnel.

Mom desperately sucked for air. Then her head slumped.

Next, he was standing by her hospital bed, where breathing bellows rose and fell. The heart monitor beeped ever slower as holes grew in the ventilators. Her whistling breath thinned. Then every machine shut off, and there was silence.

He reached out to her, but the palette morphed and he was deep below Artania, in a dark cavern surrounded by axe-wielding monsters.

Bartholomew was kneeling at his side, staring at wounds burned into his palms.

“I can't heal them,” his friend whispered.

Alex's dream-self tried to utter reassuring words, but Bartholomew only repeated, “I can't heal them.”

Then the Shadow Swine advanced, descending upon him in a mist. That filled Alex's mind.
